If getting dressed has ever felt harder than it should, chances are it’s not your wardrobe that’s the problem. It’s a handful of really common habits that so many of us fall into without even realising, and once you know what they are, they’re completely fixable.
Here are 5 things I want you to stop doing, and what to do instead.
The problem is, shopping online without being able to try things on first can feel like a gamble, especially when standard sizing rarely works for us anyway. The good news is that with a few simple checks before you hit ‘add to basket’, you can dramatically cut down the returns and start shopping with real confidence. Here’s exactly what I look for.
1. Dressing to Look Taller
Let’s start with the big one. How many times have you read advice telling you to wear nude heels to elongate your legs, or to avoid cropped styles because they’ll make you look shorter? It’s everywhere, and honestly, I think it’s time we left it behind.
There is nothing wrong with your height. You are not a problem to be solved. Dressing with the sole aim of appearing taller means spending all your energy on an illusion rather than actually enjoying getting dressed. Wear the cropped jacket. Wear the bold print. Wear whatever makes you feel good, because that confidence will always be the most noticeable thing about you.

2. Buying Your Size Instead of Your Fit
This one catches so many of us out. We head straight for our usual size, add it to the basket, and hope for the best. But sizing is completely inconsistent across brands, and for petite ladies that inconsistency is even more pronounced.
A size 10 in one brand can fit entirely differently to a size 10 in another. The number on the label tells you very little about how something will actually fit your body. What matters is the fit, not the label.

3. Trusting the Label Over Your Measurements
This isn’t about ignoring sizing completely. It’s about using it as a starting point rather than a rule. Once you know your measurements, you can cross reference them against a brand’s size guide and make a much more informed decision about what to order.
Your bust, waist, and hip measurements are your constant. The size label is just a number. Know your measurements, trust them, and let them guide you.
4. Shopping Standard Sizing and Hoping for the Best
This is one of the most common habits I see in our community, and it’s so understandable because petite sizing still isn’t as widely available as it should be. You find something you love, it’s not available in petite, and you order it anyway.
Sometimes it works. More often it doesn’t, because standard sizing is built around a taller frame. The waist sits in the wrong place, the sleeves are too long, and the hem is nowhere near where it should be. Seeking out brands that offer true petite sizing, designed for women under 5’4” from the ground up, makes an enormous difference to how clothes look and feel on your body.

5. Only Wearing What You Think You Should
Petite ladies have been handed a lot of rules over the years. No wide leg trousers. No oversized silhouettes. No bold prints. No maxis. And most of them are simply not true.
Wear what fits, wear what feels good, and stop letting outdated guidance talk you out of styles you actually love. The only thing that matters is that you feel confident and comfortable. Everything else is noise.

The Bottom Line
None of these habits are your fault. Most of us were never taught how to shop for a petite frame, and the fashion industry hasn’t always made it easy. But small shifts in how you approach shopping can make a really big difference to how you feel about your wardrobe.
